Why William Wallace?

We believe that the principles for which Sir William Wallace gave his life in 1305 are as relevant today...

in a future Scotland ... and throughout the world, as they were at the time of his death. For centuries, Wallace has been held in high esteem internationally, on a par with modern heroes Mahatma Ghandi and Nelson Mandela.

Founding statement of principles

Wallace 700 Association

William Wallace gave his life for Scotland’s freedom.

Reverend Dr Henry R Sefton

William Wallace . . . ? He is essential to the striving of the human spirit.

Professor Allan Macinnes

University of Strathclyde

William Wallace sheds as bright a glory upon his valorous nation as ever was shed upon their country by the greatest sons
of Greece and Rome.

Guiseppe Garibaldi

Italian patriot

Wallace made Scotland, he is Scotland; he is the symbol of all that is best and purest and truest and most heroic in our national life. You cannot figure to yourself Scotland without Wallace. So long as grass grows green, or water runs, or whilst the mist curls through the corries of the hills, the name of Wallace will live.

Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham

Wallace Day, 1920

WALLACE 700, a non-political charitable body, exists to advance the education of the public about the life, memory and values of William Wallace and his relevance to the heritage, culture and history of Scotland. To further these aims we intend to - annually mark Wallace’s martyrdom, promote the relevance of Wallace in today’s world regarding freedom, dignity and concern for others, and interest and involve present and future generations. The association has a Board of Trustees drawn from across the political spectrum, the arts, academia and the kirk. Day to day business is handled by a Council whose current office bearers are:

Vice Convener: ERIC WHITE

Secretary: JOHN MACKAY
